In short

For New Year in Jaisalmer, most travellers stay 2–3 nights between 30 December and 2 January, with New Year's Eve at a desert camp on the Sam or Khuri dunes for a gala dinner, folk performances and a bonfire. It's the busiest week of the year: expect rates about 80% above normal, and book as early as you can.

Why Spend New Year in Jaisalmer

Few places welcome the new year like the Thar. Winter days in Jaisalmer are golden and dry, the Fort glows at dusk, and out on the dunes the camps light their bonfires for the biggest night of the season. Manganiyar musicians play, Kalbelia dancers spin in black and silver, and at midnight the whole desert counts down together. The next morning you watch the first sunrise of the year come up over the sand.

How to Plan It

  1. Pick your base. A desert camp for the party on the dunes, or a palace or 5-star hotel in the city with a short trip out to the dunes. Many travellers split their nights between the two.
  2. Book early. Camps and heritage hotels fill up for 30 December–1 January first. Ask us now and we'll check live availability.
  3. Arrange transfers. Flights into Jaisalmer run in winter, and overnight trains arrive from Delhi and Jaipur. Book a private transfer to the dunes, because taxis are scarce on the 31st.
  4. Pack for cold nights. Bring a warm jacket, a hat and layers: about 8–9 °C at night and colder on the open dunes.

Questions

New Year questions

Is Jaisalmer good for New Year?

Yes. It's one of India's most popular New Year destinations. You get clear, dry weather, gala nights in the desert camps with folk music, dancers and a bonfire, and the first sunrise of the year over the dunes. It's also the busiest week of the year, so book early.

How much does New Year in a Jaisalmer desert camp cost?

Prices from 24 December to 2 January run well above normal peak-season rates. Our estimates add about 80% for these dates, and most camps also charge a compulsory gala dinner supplement on 31 December. Exact rates vary by camp, so we confirm them on quote.

When should I book New Year in Jaisalmer?

As early as possible. Good desert camps and heritage hotels often sell out by October or November. If you're booking in November or December, contact us straight away and we'll check live availability across camps.

How cold is Jaisalmer at New Year?

Daytime is pleasant at about 25–24 °C, but nights in the desert fall to around 8–9 °C, and colder on the open dunes. Bring a warm jacket, a hat and layers for the bonfire and the sunrise.

What happens at a New Year's Eve gala in a desert camp?

A typical evening includes a sunset camel or jeep safari, a welcome drink, Rajasthani folk music, Kalbelia and Ghoomar dancers, a bonfire, a gala dinner and a midnight countdown, sometimes with fireworks or a DJ. Programmes vary by camp, and we share each one before you book.

Sam or Khuri for New Year?

Sam has the biggest parties and the most camps to choose from. Khuri is calmer and suits couples and families who want a quieter, more traditional night. Both have camps open over New Year.
