Founded by Rawal Jaisal in 1156, Sonar Quila rises from Trikuta hill like a mirage of gold. It's one of the very few living forts in the world: inside its 99 bastions are homes, temples, cafés and shops.

Inside, explore the Raj Mahal palace museum, the exquisitely carved Jain temples, and lanes where life has gone on for 850 years.
